In January 2023 the Italian standard UNI 11896 “Classificazione dei materiali con cui sono realizzati in mobili in relazione alla loro emissione di sostanze organiche volatili” was published.
UNI 11896 provides criteria for classification of materials used to manufacture furniture (including finishes) in relation to their emission of volatile organic compounds in a laboratory setting. A finished product may also be classified based on materials classified under the current standard. The UNI 11896 standard refers to EN 16516 and defines an emission class based on the following limit values:
